Sleeping berry root

The German name for Ashwaganda is Schlafbeerenwurzel (sleeping berry root), which already reveals something about an area of application. Sometimes the name Indian ginseng is also used. The original countries of origin of Ashwaganda are Africa, China and also the Middle East. It is a nightshade plant that is actually not demanding, but does not tolerate frost, which limits its distribution somewhat.

Basically, all parts of the ashwaganda plant can be used. Traditionally, it is mainly older plants that are used, as these also contain considerably more active substances, which is important for the production of effective ashwagandha preparations. Ashwaganda contains various active ingredients, such as alkaloids. The most important, however, are the so-called withanolides. These show various effects, among others they are said to have an anxiety-relieving, relaxing, calming and sleep-promoting effect. If taken for at least four weeks, they also lower the cortisol level and thus the stress level and have a regulating effect on the day-night rhythm
