Coenzyme NADH
NADH, also called coenzyme 1, is the oxidized variant of NAD+. Written out, this has the long name nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide.

This energy is then transferred to the NAD+ by reducing it to NADH. In the process, two electrons and one proton are taken up. The NADH now serves as an energy carrier. In this state, it can also accept another proton, producing NADH+H+. This proton, as well as the proton and electrons first taken up, can then be released elsewhere where their energy is needed.
Subsequently, the NADH or NADH+H+ is further used mainly in cellular respiration. Cellular respiration takes place in the mitochondria, the so-called “power plants of the cell”. Here, the energy-rich NADH is oxidized again, i.e. it releases energy. Subsequently, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is generated via certain processes. This in turn is the ultimate energy carrier of the cells, without which no cell can survive.
The body needs this energy to maintain the processes taking place in the body.
